How to Use Henna and Indigo Powder for Natural Hair Colouring at Home

How to Use Henna and Indigo Powder for Natural Hair Colouring at Home

For generations, Kerala households have relied on two simple herbal powders to colour hair naturally — Henna and Indigo. Free from PPD, ammonia, and synthetic dyes, this traditional two-step method is still one of the most trusted herbal hair colouring routines in South India.

At Blueberry Botanicals, we source both Henna Powder and Neelamari Indigo Powder from trusted botanical origins and pack them hygienically with batch numbers and manufacturing dates clearly printed.

Why Is It a Two-Step Process?

Henna alone gives a reddish-orange tone. Indigo alone does not bind well to hair without a Henna base. Together, in a two-step process, they produce tones ranging from warm brown to deep black — depending on timing and hair type.

What You Will Need

Step-by-Step Application Guide

Step 1 — Henna Application

  1. Mix Henna Powder with warm water (or lemon juice for stronger colour) to form a smooth, lump-free paste.
  2. Let the paste rest for 1–2 hours to allow dye release.
  3. Apply evenly from roots to tips using a brush or gloved hands.
  4. Cover with a shower cap and leave for 1–2 hours.
  5. Rinse thoroughly with water only — no shampoo at this stage.

Step 2 — Indigo Application (immediately after rinsing Henna)

  1. Mix Neelamari Indigo Powder with plain water to form a smooth paste. Use immediately — do not let it rest.
  2. Apply evenly over the Henna-treated hair from roots to tips.
  3. Leave for 45–60 minutes.
  4. Rinse thoroughly with water. You may shampoo lightly after 24 hours.

Tips for Longer-Lasting Colour

  • Avoid shampooing for 24–48 hours after the process.
  • Use a sulphate-free shampoo to maintain colour longevity.
  • Repeat every 4–6 weeks for consistent coverage.
  • Add Nellikka Powder to your hair oiling routine between colour sessions for conditioning.

Patch Test — Always Do This First

Even with natural herbal powders, a patch test is essential. Apply a small amount of mixed paste to the inner wrist and wait 24 hours before full application. If irritation occurs, discontinue use and consult a dermatologist.
