What Is Traditional Herbal Hair Care?
Traditional herbal hair care refers to the practice of using botanical powders — derived from plants, roots, and leaves — in hair colouring, conditioning, and scalp care routines. These traditions have been practised across India for centuries, particularly in Kerala and South India, where botanical knowledge has been preserved and passed down through generations.
At Blueberry Botanicals, we source these ingredients with care and pack them hygienically for safe home use across India.

Henna + Indigo Two-Step Hair Colour Guide
The Henna + Indigo two-step process is one of India’s most traditional methods for natural hair colouring. Here is the traditional preparation method:
Step 1 — Henna Application
- Mix Henna Powder with warm water to a smooth, lump-free paste
- Rest the paste for 30–60 minutes (dye release)
- Apply evenly to clean, dry hair from roots to tips
- Cover with a shower cap and leave for 1–3 hours
- Rinse thoroughly with water — do not shampoo immediately
Step 2 — Indigo Application
- Mix Indigo Powder with warm water immediately before use (do not rest)
- Apply indigo paste to henna-treated hair immediately after mixing
- Leave for 45–60 minutes
- Rinse thoroughly with water
Important: Always perform a strand test before full application. Individual results may vary based on hair type, natural colour, and porosity. These are traditionally used herbal preparations and are not intended to guarantee specific colour results.
Tone Guide (Traditional)
- Henna only: Reddish-orange to auburn tones
- Henna + Indigo (1:1): Medium to dark brown tones

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Henna and Indigo Powder?
Henna (Lawsonia inermis) imparts reddish-orange tones and is traditionally applied first. Indigo (Indigofera tinctoria) is applied after henna to deepen the colour toward brown or near-black. They are traditionally used together in a two-step process for natural hair colouring.
Can I use Indigo Powder without Henna?
Indigo Powder is traditionally used after henna in a two-step process. Using indigo alone on uncoloured hair may not produce the expected results. A strand test is always recommended. Individual results may vary.
How long does herbal hair colour last?
Traditional herbal hair colour using henna and indigo typically fades gradually over 4–6 weeks depending on hair type, washing frequency, and sun exposure. Individual results may vary.
Is Gooseberry (Nellikka) Powder the same as Amla Powder?
Yes. Gooseberry (Nellikka) is the traditional Malayalam name for Amla (Phyllanthus emblica / Indian Gooseberry). It is the same botanical ingredient, traditionally used in hair care routines across India.
Can I mix Gooseberry (Nellikka) Powder with Henna?
Gooseberry (Nellikka) Powder is sometimes added to henna preparations in traditional routines. A strand test is recommended when trying new combinations. Individual results may vary.
Are these products safe for chemically treated hair?
A strand test is strongly recommended for chemically treated or colour-treated hair. Consult a qualified practitioner before use if you have specific hair concerns.
Do you offer bulk orders for salons and white labelling?
