How to Grow Broccoli from Seeds

Step 1: Start Seeds in Trays

  • Fill seedling trays with cocopeat and vermicompost (50:50)
  • Sow 1–2 seeds per cell, 0.5–1 cm deep
  • Germination: 5–7 days at 20–25°C
  • Transplant in 3–4 weeks (10–15 cm tall, 4–5 true leaves)

Step 2: Soil Preparation

  • Add 2–3 kg of compost per square metre before transplanting
  • Ideal soil pH: 6.0–7.0
  • Add crushed eggshells or agricultural lime if soil is acidic

Step 3: Transplanting

  • Transplant in the evening or on a cloudy day
  • Spacing: 45–60 cm between plants; 60 cm between rows
  • Water immediately after transplanting

Step 4: Watering

  • Consistent moisture is critical — irregular watering causes hollow stems
  • Water deeply 2–3 times per week; mulch around plants
  • Avoid wetting the developing head — can cause rot

Step 5: Fertilising

  • Apply nitrogen-rich fertiliser 2–3 weeks after transplanting
  • Switch to balanced fertiliser once the head begins to form

Harvesting Broccoli

  • Harvest when the head is firm, tight, and deep green — before any yellow flowers open
  • Cut the main head with 10–15 cm of stem using a sharp knife
  • Side shoots develop after the main harvest — harvest regularly to extend the season

Common Problems and Solutions

  • Bolting: Heat stress or late transplanting. Ensure correct sowing timing for your region.
  • Hollow stems: Boron deficiency or irregular watering. Add borax solution (1g/litre) as foliar spray.
  • Caterpillars: Hand-pick; apply Bt spray; use row covers
  • Aphids: Neem oil spray; introduce ladybirds
  • Downy mildew: Improve air circulation; avoid overhead watering

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I grow broccoli in summer in India?

Broccoli is a cool-season crop and does not grow well in Indian summers above 30°C. Stick to the Rabi season (October–March), except in hill stations where summer growing is possible.

Can I grow broccoli in pots on a terrace?

Yes — use a pot at least 30 cm deep and 30 cm wide per plant. Ensure good drainage and consistent watering.

Why is my broccoli head turning yellow?

Yellow broccoli heads mean the flowers are opening — harvest immediately. Always harvest heads while tight and deep green.

How long does broccoli take to grow from seed in India?

70–90 days from transplanting to harvest (90–110 days from seed). Start seeds 3–4 weeks before your intended transplant date.

What is the best fertiliser for broccoli in India?

Compost and vermicompost are the best base fertilisers. Supplement with compost tea or fish emulsion for nitrogen during the vegetative stage, then switch to a balanced fertiliser once the head begins to form.
