Broccoli Seeds – Cool Season Brassica for Home & Terrace Gardening

Broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italica) is one of the most nutritious cool-season vegetables you can grow at home. With its dense green florets, crisp texture, and versatility in the kitchen, home-grown broccoli is a rewarding addition to any Indian terrace or balcony garden. This country variety is well-adapted to Indian winter conditions and produces compact, productive plants ideal for container gardening.

Whether you are growing on a terrace in Kerala, a balcony in Delhi, or a rooftop garden in Mumbai, broccoli thrives in India’s cool winter months (October–February) and rewards patient gardeners with a generous main head followed by continuous side-shoot harvests.

Growing Guide

Sowing: Sow seeds 1–2 cm deep in seed trays or small pots filled with moist potting mix. Germination occurs in 5–7 days at 15–25°C. Transplant seedlings to final containers when 10–15 cm tall (3–4 weeks after sowing).

Container & Soil: Use a 12–15 inch deep pot or 20–25 litre grow bag. Potting mix: 40% cocopeat + 40% compost + 20% perlite. Broccoli is a heavy feeder — enrich soil with vermicompost before planting.

Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade; 5–6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Broccoli tolerates partial shade better than most vegetables.

Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water at the base of the plant — avoid wetting the developing head to prevent rot. Water every 1–2 days in dry conditions.

Fertilising: Apply compost tea every 7–10 days. Top dress with vermicompost every 3–4 weeks. Broccoli is a heavy nitrogen feeder — nitrogen-rich fertiliser promotes leafy growth and head development.

Harvest: Harvest the main head when florets are tight and dark green — before any yellowing begins. Cut with a sharp knife leaving 10–15 cm of stem. Side shoots will continue to develop and can be harvested over several weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I sow broccoli seeds in India?
Sow October–December in South India (Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka) and September–November in North India (Delhi, Punjab, UP). Broccoli requires cool temperatures (15–25°C) for best head formation — avoid sowing in summer.

Can I grow broccoli in a container?
Yes! Broccoli grows well in 12–15 inch deep pots or 20–25 litre grow bags. Use rich, well-draining potting mix with plenty of compost. One plant per container. Ensure full sun to partial shade and consistent watering.

How long does broccoli take to grow from seed?
Germination: 5–7 days. Transplant at 3–4 weeks. First harvest: 70–90 days after transplanting. Total time from seed to harvest: approximately 90–110 days.

Why is my broccoli not forming a head?
Most common causes: temperatures too warm (above 25°C), insufficient sunlight, or nitrogen deficiency. Ensure cool temperatures, 5–6 hours of sunlight, and regular nitrogen-rich fertilising.

Can I grow broccoli in Kerala?
Yes! Broccoli grows well in Kerala during the cool winter months (November–February). Grow in a location with good morning sun. Kerala’s mild winters are ideal for brassica crops.

Disclaimer: Germination rates may vary depending on soil quality, climate conditions, watering practices, and seed storage. Seeds should be sown during appropriate cool-season months for best results. This product is for home gardening and culinary purposes only.
