Care Guide

Sunlight: Prefers morning sun with afternoon shade. Avoid harsh direct afternoon sun which can scorch leaves and fade blooms. Dappled light or 3–4 hours of gentle morning sun is ideal.

Watering: Hydrangeas need consistent moisture. Water deeply every 2–3 days. Never allow the soil to dry out completely — wilting is a sign of water stress. Mulch around the base to retain moisture.

Soil: Use a humus-rich, well-draining potting mix. For deeper purple/blue tones, maintain slightly acidic soil (pH 5.0–6.0) by adding aluminium sulphate or acidic compost. Higher pH (above 6.5) shifts colour towards pink.

Fertilizing: Apply balanced NPK (10-10-10) monthly during the growing season. Switch to a high-potassium feed (0-10-10) during the flowering phase to support large, long-lasting blooms.

Pruning: Prune lightly after flowering — remove spent flower heads and dead wood. Avoid heavy pruning as Hydrangea blooms on old wood. Light shaping in late winter is sufficient.

Pest & Disease Guide

Watch for aphids and spider mites in dry conditions — treat with neem oil spray. Powdery mildew can occur in humid, poorly ventilated conditions — improve air circulation and treat with neem oil. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Hydrangea grow in Kerala's climate?
Yes — with the right care. Hydrangeas prefer cooler, shaded conditions. In Kerala, grow them in partial shade, water consistently, and avoid harsh afternoon sun. They perform well in hill stations and shaded garden spots.
Why is my Hydrangea not purple?
Hydrangea flower colour is influenced by soil pH. Acidic soil (pH 5.0–6.0) produces purple/blue tones. If your soil is alkaline, add aluminium sulphate or use an acidic potting mix to restore purple colour.
Can I grow Purple Hydrangea in a pot?
Yes — use a 12–16 inch pot with good drainage and humus-rich potting mix. Keep consistently moist and place in a spot with morning sun and afternoon shade.
How often should I water Hydrangea?
Water every 2–3 days, or whenever the top inch of soil feels dry. Hydrangeas are sensitive to drought — consistent moisture is key to healthy blooms.
Can I use Hydrangea flowers for floral arrangements?
Absolutely — Hydrangea blooms are excellent as cut flowers and also dry beautifully, retaining their colour and shape for months.
What is the HSN code for Hydrangea plant?
HSN code 06029090 — Other live plants, cuttings and slips.
