Pterocarpus santalinus, known as Raktachandana (Red Sandalwood) in classical Ayurveda, is a prized heartwood used extensively in classical Ayurvedic external applications. Distinct from white sandalwood (Santalum album), Raktachandana is characterised by its deep red heartwood and classical Pitta-pacifying, skin-cooling properties referenced in Ashtangahrudayam and other classical texts.
